Ryan is a seed stage technology investor & founder of Pathbreaker Ventures. Prior to starting Pathbreaker, Ryan was a deal lead on the corporate development team at Facebook where he spent time working with product and engineering teams to landscape technology ecosystems and execute acquisitions in pursuit of Facebook's mission. Acquisitions worked on include Oculus, PrivateCore, LiveRail, Teehan Lax, and NimbleVR. Areas of focus included virtual reality, security, artificial intelligence, video, and product design. Prior to Facebook, Ryan worked in both an investing and operating role at Azure Capital, an early stage venture capital firm with $750 million under management. In addition to series A & B investing, he worked within portfolio companies as VP of Business Development & Partnerships at Telly, the video discovery & content network, and at Convercent, the SAAS leader in employee governance, risk, and compliance. Ryan is the co-founder of H.E.R.O. for Children, the first non-profit focused on quality of life care for children affected by HIV/AIDS. Ryan built HERO to $1M in revenue and 2,000 volunteers. In 2018, HERO celebrates its 15th Anniversary where Ryan continues to serve on the Board. Ryan earned his MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business where he focused on finance, entrepreneurship, and early stage tech investing. At Chicago, he and his team won the International Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC) out of 56 MBA programs. Ryan speaks Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian and is learning robotics programming.
Brick Mortar Ventures
Darren Bechtel is the founder and Managing Director of Brick & Mortar Ventures, the leading sector-specific venture capital fund focused on emerging technologies to improve the way we design, build, and maintain our built environment. Darren has been the single most active early stage investor in AEC and FM tech over the past five years, with his first four construction tech deals being Seed round investments into PlanGrid, BuildZoom, BuildingConnected, and Rhumbix. Since then, Darren and the Brick & Mortar team have invested in over 25 startups aiming to improve productivity, safety, and environmental impact of constructing and caring for the built environment. Darren Bechtel brings over 7 years of engineering, product and architectural design, and construction management professional experience to the Brick & Mortar team, as well as over 8 years of venture investing as the founder and managing director of South Park Ventures. Darren holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with a Product Design focus from Stanford University and an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Ryan is a passionate husband, father, entrepreneur, angel investor, mentor, and creative thinker. Ryan has had a lifelong love of tech. He first learned how to program at 11, developed his first site at 13 and started his first internet business at the age of 16. Prior to Base, Ryan was the CEO and co-founder of AppStores.com, which was acquired by InMobi (one of the largest mobile advertising companies). AppStores.com was a white label app store platform that gives publishers the tools to run their own micro app stores. Ryan founded AppStores.com after leaving Facebook, where he was an early employee and part of the Platform team. While at Facebook he helped major platform partners like Disney, Hulu and Spotify effectively leverage the Facebook Platform. Before Facebook, Ryan co-founded Ping.fm (acquired by Seesmic), a service that allows users to post across multiple social networks at once. He has also worked at CBS Interactive in San Francisco as a Senior Product Designer, where he launched the very first implementation of Facebook Connect and numerous social applications for various properties. Ryan holds a degree in Visual Design from Oklahoma Wesleyan University, is left-handed, but also loves to code. This gives him a unique perspective that allows him to be a huge asset in product, marketing, engineering, and operations to the companies he advises and invests in.
